PICO ALTO

EXERGY, in partnership with CME, designed and built a 4 MWe geothermal plant for EDA RENOVÁVEIS on Terceira Island, 1500 km from mainland Portugal. The plant harnesses high enthalpy geothermal heat from both steam and brine, producing green electricity that meets up to 10% of the island’s energy needs. The EXERGY-CME consortium provided a turnkey solution for this challenging project.

Client name:
EDA RENOVAVEIS

Plant Location:
TERCEIRA ISLAND, AZORES

Date of implementation:
2017

Plant size:
4  MWE

Application:
GEOTHERMAL

Flow of Geothermal Steam/Brine:
34.4 – 51.5 t/h

Pressure of Geothermal Steam/Brine:
5.6 – 10 BAR

Temperature of Geothermal Steam/Brine:
161.4 – 175.1 °C

Type of fluid:
STEAM + BRINE

Condensing system:
AIR 23 °C

Generator voltage:
11 KV

Installation:
OUTDOOR

EXERGY provided a comprehensive turnkey solution, covering the engineering and construction of the gathering systems, an air-cooled ORC unit with EXERGY’s Radial Outflow Turbine, and all balance of plant equipment, ensuring seamless integration and reliable operation. The plant harnesses high enthalpy geothermal heat from both steam and brine. Launched in 2017, since the bebinning of its operation it demonstrated high efficiency, generating up to 4.9 MW of power, with an average output of 4.5 MW—exceeding performance guarantees.
The power plant delivers sustainable, green electricity, covering 10% of Terceira Island’s energy needs and benefiting over 56,000 residents. Additionally, the plant reduces carbon emissions by approximately 12,000 tons annually, equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 5,800 hectares of forest. With 98% operational availability in its first year, the plant ensures optimal resource management through maximum water reinjection, further enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
